The award will be given in two parts.  The recipient will receive $1,000.00 for use in their final year of study at Gardner-Webb University.  In addition, the recipient will be eligible for 3 hours credit through the Broyhill School of Management at no extra cost.  To receive the credit hours the recipient must successfully complete the development of a business plan in support of their essay during their final year at Gardner-Webb.  The Chairman of the award committee (or the Chairman's designate) will serve as advisor to the recipient during the development of the business plan.  The business plan will include, but not be limited to, the areas of entrepreneurial and strategic planning, marketing, accounting and finance, operations, human resource, technology, and presentation skills.  Upon completion of the business plan, the recipient will present the plan to the faculty of the Broyhill School of Management and representatives of the Griggs family.

Dr. Franklin Keith Griggs

Keith Griggs was born and raised in Alamance County, North Carolina.  Having lost his father early in life, Keith was not afforded many of the opportunities that many equate with success.  Rather than regarding his circumstances a hindrance, Keith was motivated to overcome the difficulties and succeed.  Keith earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Appalachian State University, a second Master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a Doctorate of Education from Virginia Polytechnic University.  To Keith, learning was a life long process.

Keith devoted 34 years of his life to the success of Gardner-Webb - both to the institution and to the people involved.  He was a man who was happiest when teaching.  Keith's academic passion was the area of entrepreneurship.  Helping students develop ideas for small businesses was always at the forefront of Keith's thoughts and actions.

A devout family man of strong Christian faith, Keith Griggs exemplified all the virtues and qualities that Gardner-Webb University holds so dear.
